Venezuela's Political Disaster - May 20, 2007

Dear Journalists,

Outraged about the current political situation in Venezuela please accept the following comments concerning the Reuters' article "Venezuelans protest opposition TV channel closure" linked below:

It seems that besides Chavez's main whim vindication to shut down Radio Caracas Television (RCTV) for reporting the truth, Chavez does not like soap operas. "Chavez has vowed not to renew RCTV's broadcast license when it expires on May 27. It will be replaced by a state channel showing programs that promote the values of Chavez's self-styled leftist revolution. He accuses RCTV's saucy soap operas of spreading immorality."

Maybe the infamous leader can not think beyond his stubbornness. I personally can not stand soap operas. I do not watch them, and at home my family watches different shows and soap operas are just ignored. But, that is our personal choice and freedom to do so.

Perhaps Chavez can have the Venezuelan equivalent of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to have dedicated soap opera channel(s), so who ever wants to watch those shows can do so and censure the channel(s) if needed. I would not like to have children watching steamy shows on TV soft porn style.

The above mentioned possibility could be an alternative to shut down a beloved television network, and the blow against human rights.

Cordially,

Maru Angarita
