Venezuela's Political Disaster - October 22, 2006

Dear Journalists,

Attached below please find link to interview to Former Venezuelan Ambassador to the United Nations Diego Arria published in El Universal commenting on Chavez's deadlock negotions to obtain Latin America's rotating two-year seat at the United Nations Security Council:

http://www.eluniversal.com/2006/10/22/int_art_41333.shtml

Ambassador Arria explains that in the past Venezuela never had to pay or promote their time to serve at this prestigious seat at the United Nations. However, Chavez allegedly has spent over one billion dollars trying to get countries to help him earn the 125 votes needed for this seat.

Perhaps Chavez's stubbornness at the United Nations would give an idea of the results for the upcoming presidential elections in Venezuela in December 2006. Is Chavez going to accept if he were to lose as presidential candidate? Are Venezuelans going to have to put up to 35 rounds of counting of the votes? Or are the elections results would be easily announced as Chavez the winner after e-voting tabulation by government owned Smartmatic?

The help of good willing international organizations is urgently needed to assure a democratic outcome of the presidential elections in the hostage nation.

Cordially,

Maru Angarita
